We took a tram tour of the Garden City when we were in Christchurch this summer.
With only one full day in Christchurch before heading on our way down New Zealand‘s South Island, we decided the best way to see as much as possible in the Garden City was to jump on one of the iconic trams. While I’ve spent a lot of time in Christchurch over the years, it was so nice to be able to learn a little about the history, and see what new renovations and innovations were emerging, post 2011 earthquakes.

At the moment, the tramways are limited by earthquake damage and new construction, but even the parts that they do have up and running really make it worthwhile. Much like a hop-on hop-off bus for tourists in major cities around the world, the Christchurch Tram pass allows you to get on and off the tram as many times as you like throughout the course of the day. A day pass is NZD$25 and is definitely worth it.

Stop off at the container city, the famous Margaret Mahy Playground, the botanic gardens, the museum, and the cardboard Cathedral. To get a feel for the city and the incredible steps it’s taking to both reinvent itself and preserve the old Christchurch, the tram tour is a great way to go about it.
