The beginning of Sherlock Holmes.
A Study in Scarlet was published in 1887 in Beeton’s Christmas Annual. It was the very first appearance of our now beloved Sherlock Holmes and his partner in crime-solving, Dr. John Watson. I wonder if Doyle knew then what a gigantic hit his characters would be. I wonder if he thought they would become so much more than just characters on a page, in a Christmas annual published only a year after his story was written. I wonder.
Since that story in the Christmas annual 125 years ago, Sherlock Holmes has had hundreds of re-imaginings. From movies to TV shows, set tours and memorabilia, quirky collectables and a billion members in the Sherlock fandom, the detective has come a long way indeed.
I myself, am a huge Sherlock (2010 BBC tv series) fan, but have always loved the stories, even before seeing films such as the 2009 adaptation with Robert Downy Jnr. and Jude Law. To celebrate the 125th anniversary of A Study in Scarlet, I thought I’d gather together some of the neat Sherlock-related items you can find around the internet. All links are listed below.
