Looking for Pokemon in Auckland?
It hasn’t been that long since Pokemon Go hit our app stores here in New Zealand. Being one of the first countries to be able to download this latest craze was not only a privilege but it also showed just how crazily mad the world-wide release was going to be. People swarmed the city trying to find the best places in Auckland for Pokemon Go.
I, like the rest of New Zealand, was out hunting Pokemon in the wild most of the first Friday and Saturday, and while I was initially supposed to be showing my friend around some of Auckland’s locations, it was just an added bonus that we could catch Pokemon there. In just two days we went to about 6 different locations and managed to get up to level 10 by the end of Day 3.
For those of you in Auckland, you probably already have your favourite spots around the city for catching Pokemon, but today I thought I’d just share with you the top 3 places that we went to on our first Pokemon hunting excursion.

3 top spots for Pokemon Go in Auckland
- The Auckland Botanic Gardens
- Mission Bay
- Auckland Domain
The Auckland Botanic Gardens
There are pathways, there are grasslands, there’s water at the Auckland Botanic Gardens. Not only is it a great place for finding more than Pokemon, but it also has a lot of Pokestops scattered around the gardens too. Most are about 100m apart, but there are some areas where 4 or 5 steps away from each other. The amount of Pokemon hiding in bushes and streams is vast, so having all those Pokestops in one place is really handy.
Added Bonus: There’s a Botanic Garden app that you can download, so as you’re walking around the gardens catching Pokemon, people could easily mistake you for just using the garden’s app.

Mission Bay
What.A.Mine.Field. You may have even seen the short segment on Breakfast last week, and the picture of Mission Bay being flooded with people last week. Mission Bay may be busy, but you’re more likely to find Lure Pokestops there, simply because of the masses of people. I headed down there again in the middle of the day last week, and there were still swarms of people.
Added Bonus: There’s a lot of Normal Pokemon, but there are also Water Pokemon, so while you may end up with a thousand Magikarps, you may score yourself a Seel while you’re down there. (So far, I’ve only caught one, and that upsets me a little.)

Auckland Domain
The Auckland Domain is such a great place for Pokemon catching that there was even an event there last Saturday. Hundreds of people showed up to wander around the Domain catching their Pokemon, and again, it’s great because there’s water there as well as a lot of grass and roads. There are also quite a lot of Pokestops – not as much as the Botanic Gardens, I don’t think – and the number of times we bumped into other people also playing were every few minutes.
Added Bonus: There are several gyms at the Domain, so while there may be a lot of people there, there will be a lot of people to battle. Claim those gyms, friends!
Auckland Domain Pokemon Go Walk: The 16th of July was meant to be event day at the Domain where Pokemon players from around the city were going to gather and hang out, catch Pokemon and battle at the gyms together. Unfortunately, it’s been postponed, but you can now head along on the 6th of August.
There will be so many great places around Auckland (and of course, whatever city you reside in!) for catching Pokemon, but those are just 3 I found to be particularly good on my very first journey out into the wild.
If you have found other great places, feel free to let us know in the comments – even if you’re not in Auckland!
Let’s help each other out!
