Cirque du Soleil Quidam in Auckland

I feel like this is going to become the norm, should I stay in Auckland. Last time Cirque du Soleil was here was in 2014, and it was Cirque du Soleil Totem. It was amazing. So this year, when they announced that Quidam was coming to Auckland, my friend and I decided we had to go.

Quidam is the 9th Cirque du Soleil performance, and it started back in 1996. It tells the story of a bored young girl who just wants her parents’ attention. “She dreams up the whimsical world of Quidam as a means of escaping the monotony of her life”, and begins by meeting a mysterious headless man, and ends up with his hat. When she puts it on, she’s almost transported into this surreal world of clowns (*shudder* and *cringe*) and crazy acrobats, amazing performers and flying people. Eventually the headless man comes looking for his hat, and she goes back to her parents.

I love the idea of putting on a hat and going somewhere else. It reminds me of the Hatter’s hat in Once Upon a Time. So great. Anyway, the performances were incredible, as you would expect, and while you weren’t allowed to take photos, I obviously took one. However, the internet has some great pictures, so here are some of the acts:

The second half of the show was definitely better, with more gasp worthy acts, and on the whole I think I liked Totem a lot better. However! That’s not to say that Quidam wasn’t good – it was fantastic. But I think I would see Totem again, but wouldn’t see Quidam for a second time.

My favourite act was this one below, with 5 performers on the ropes. It was amazing what they can do and the strength they all have. Incredible. My other favourite was one where there was a lot of tossing up in the air, and this amazing part where two acrobats jumped almost horizontally across the stage and landed in the arms of others. So amazing.

Overall, definitely worth going to. I think it’s finished up in Auckland, but it’s on until the 24th in Christchurch. If you’re down there, make sure you grab a ticket!
