Today is your birthday, and you would have turned 75. While you only made it to 40 we thank you for helping change the music industry back in the 60s with your weird beats, odd melodies and crazy lyrics. Together with Paul, George and Ringo you made many a car trip with my family bearable, and I will forever know your lyrics off by heart from belting them out in our Nissan Serena.
Sometimes I think about a world without the Beatles, and it makes me sad. Thank goodness that that is not the case. The majority of songs I can play on the ukulele are you and your band mates’ songs, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Without your music we wouldn’t have had the 2007 movie, Across the Universe, which, contrary to a lot of people in the world, I actually really enjoyed. Neither would we have had Rowan Atkinson’s hilarious version of Yesterday, or have been able to change to words in Yellow Submarine to ‘tub of margarine’ (sorry about that – kids, eh?).
Sure, it was a bit of a drama with Yoko and the band broke up, but you know what? That’s life. It’s in the past, and we’re okay with it now.
So thank you, Mr. Lennon, and Happy Birthday.
