Being huge Jane Austen fans, it was absolutely despicable that my best friend and I had not yet seen Death Comes to Pemberley. It came out in 2013 for goodness sake! I was even in England when they showed it on TV. *shakes head in disgust and in embarrassment*
If you have no idea what I’m talking about, Death Comes to Pemberley is a mini series by the BBC, which is based on the book by the same name by P.D James. I haven’t actually read anything by P.D James but I was aware she existed. The story is three episode long, at about an hour each, and tells the story of the characters in Pride and Prejudice 6 years later. Darcy and Elizabeth have a son, Lydia and Wickham are still married, Georgiana Darcy is still trying to find a man, Mrs Bennet is still her crazy loud self, and there is, of course, preparations for an annual ball (because there will be a ball, obivously).
Enter Wickham, Lydia and a new character, Captain Denny, on their way to Pemberley to the ball, although uninvited. There had been arguments between Wickhan and Denny, and all of a sudden, Denny tells the driver to stop, and he storms out of the carriage and into the woods. Wickham follows, shots are heard, and the carriage driver races towards Pemberley with a screaming Lydia in tow. When Darcy, his cousin Colonel Fitzwilliam and others, for a search party and head into the woods to find out what Lydia is screaming about, they discover Wickham cradling a dead Captain Denny. The rest of the story follows the inquest and the trial of Wickham, and as it all unfolds around them, there’s more to the story than what it first seems. Dun dun dun. Drama!
It was very good, and I would watch it again for sure, even though I know ‘who dun it’ and why. Not only was it a great story (Thanks, P.D. James – and a brilliant way to jump back into the Darcys’ lives, post Austen), the acting was great, and all the wonders of that era were just as spectacular as the other Austen movies and shows. It’s definitely worth a watch if you haven’t seen it and love the Pride and Prejudice story.
