I was born in 1991 (quickly, quickly, do the maths…that’s right, I’m 24), and so many of the shows that went on for seasons and seasons began around then. But I was just too young to be watching them. Even shows that started in the late 90s, early 2000s I was too young for and have only watched/discovered later in life. I was thinking about this the other day and realised there were actually quite a few shows that I have watched and loved that were actually aired, loved, shown, continued, and then ended before I even saw them. This is super sad. But it’s actually also super awesome because it means I have many shows to binge watch, and we all love that right? Right. So I thought I’d make a list of all the TV shows that I have watched and loved, even though I discovered them way too late. Some of them are actually still going strong, so I’ll pop them at the end of the list.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
I think Buffy is possibly one of my favourite shows ever. I watched the entire show within a couple of months when a good friend of mine discovered that I hadn’t seen. I was slightly sceptical at first, it being so 90s and about a teenager kicking vampires’ butts…but those are the reasons I love it so much. It’s so brilliant and I have just recently started my collection of Buffy seasons on DVD so I can rewatch them…forever and ever.
Obviously once I had binge watched Buffy, I had to watch Angel. While the ending angered me, I really want to rewatch this entire show too.
Another show that my friend had on DVD that she insisted on me watching. She’s a couple of years older than I am, so she actually watched all these shows when they were actually on TV. I binge watched Roswell, too, while I was supposed to studying for University exams in 2011…but I didn’t fail a single exam, and Roswell was actually so fantastic, I love it!
My bestie and I are slowly making our way through Charmed. I say ‘slowly’ because it’s literally taken us over a year to get up to Season 2 episode 5. It’s because we only watch it when we’re together, and while that’s quite often, it’s not often at one of our houses with enough time to sit down and binge watch Charmed. I think, though, we need to make a weekend of it, otherwise this is going to take until we’re retired to finish the show. I’m loving it though, I seriously wished I watched it when it was actually out (although I was only 7 when it came out…perhaps a little young).
Woooo! Okay, so Gilmore Girls is one of those shows that I didn’t see when it was out, and by the time I was actually sort of aware of it and it’s potential awesomeness, I was so many seasons behind that I never actually bothered starting. But then this year some of my friends told me I must watch it (don’t I have great friends!?), and after watching Season 1 with them, I went and bought seasons 2 – 4 and am currently making my way through season 4, because I love it and it’s amazing and my life was ridiculous before now. I will never look back.
The same friend who had Buffy, Angel and Roswell? Also responsible for my found love of Veronica Mars. Veronica Mars was binge watched also, over the course of a winter in the little pool house I lived in in 2011, while painting a painting on my floor for my friend’s birthday. I have these three seasons and the movie on DVD, but have yet to rewatch them.
This happened in a weird way…kinda. I hadn’t heard of it at all, until my friends bought the BSG board game and invited a few of us round to play it. And then we were hooked on this awesome game, so I just had to watch the show. I watched all four seasons (4 seasons!!) in…10 days. You can read more about that here.
After watching Doctor Who sort of in secret (long story) and loving it (for obvious reasons) and then becoming a total fangirl for the rest of my life, it wasn’t until about 2010 that I found out about Torchwood, the spin off. It was like a whole new world opened up, guys, and it was wonderful and exciting and set in Cardiff, and it was just brilliant and now I’m rambling. I.Love.This.Show. Of course, I was all up to date (actually twice, re-watching it basically straight after the first watching) when Torchwood Miracle Day came out (2011), and while it wasn’t as good as the other seasons, it was still great. It’s the only one I haven’t rewatched (yet).
This show never came to New Zealand, so I would have never known about it unless my friend had told me about it. She had bought it from the USA and we watched it, and I loved it so much that I found it here in NZ and bought it. It’s only 2 seasons, so it’s a nice short series, but it’s so so sweet, and I love everything about it.
One Tree Hill
I am almost finished this! I up to season 18 episode 10. Not too long to go now! I really love this show…and I’m just trying to remember when I actually started watching it. I think a friend leant it to me and I watched the first 5 seasons straight, and then it’s taken me a little longer to watch the rest because I don’t have a copy of it. But it’s so great! Love it a lot!
It was summer of 2010/2011 and I had just moved in with my best friend and her family, in their pool house next to their fancy home, and I swear this is true and I’m not just telling you the beginning of The OC. But I did actually feel like Ryan at times because I was literally living in a mini house with a pool outside my door, and with a family who lived in a big fancy house. But I guess there the similarities end. This show though. There was laughter, and frustrations, and NAW, and tears. Many tears at points. But so so great, and it is one that I would love to rewatch at some point.
Friday Night Lights
Okay, so I don’t know if I can actually count this one because I’ve only seen the first season. I really enjoyed it though! So that must count for something right? I was in England when I saw it, but I’ve never picked up the second season. Yet. It’s on my list!
So that’s the shows that have ended, but that I either watched or am still watching. I thought I’d just add a few more into the mix of shows that I started late but that are still actually rocking the TV screens of people today.
It’s weird how much I like this show. I feel like I shouldn’t, because my goodness it’s evil and dark…but my goodness it’s good. Oh, and also…Sam and Dean. Dean and Sam. Jared and Jensen. Jensen and Jared. To me that’s reason enough. Am I right?! (Also Castiel…because Misha Collins is hilarious.) I only started watching this show in England I think, so that means I’ve managed to watch 9 seasons in like 3 years…while watching other things. That’s pretty good! A little bit behind on this show, but I was just thinking today that I need to start watching Season 10. Only one season behind! Hazaa!
Pretty Little Liars
Okay, so I haven’t finished season 1 yet, but the amount of awesomeness that has already occurred means I’m going to be continuing this TV show adventure.
I’ll tell you a secret: I didn’t know this show existed until my best friend suddenly got hooked on it and wouldn’t stop talking about it. I thought it was from the 80s, so I didn’t want anything to do with it, but then she was like ‘it came out in 2011!’ which immediately changed my mind. I haven’t had a werewolf show in a while, other than Vampire Diaries and the Originals, so why not? And guys, I hated to admit it to her, but I really enjoyed it. Eek. What a weirdo. Ah well. So I’m up to season 3 I think. A little behind. All good. It’s cheesy and lame, and full of teen angst and…well, werewolves. But what’s not to love, right?
I discovered this a a few years after it started, but that was fine because it meant I had several seasons to binge watch before I caught up. And it’s actually one of my favourite shows ever and I can’t wait until the Northern Hemisphere fall when it’ll come out again! Eeep! Love it!
That’s all I can think of right now. There may be some I’ve missed out. It’s weird how some of my favourite shows ever are ones that all began in the late 90s or the early 00s. Sure I’ve got shows now that I watch and love…but my faves are definitely the ‘older’ ones. This post is so long, sorry, and it’s made me realise how many blimmin hours of shows I’ve watched. In my defence, I’m always doing something else when I watch TV shows…blogging, sewing, crafting for the shop, painting, event planning, organising photos. Lots.
