Cirque du Soleil Totem in Auckland

Cirque du Soleil: Totem Was incredible

Going to Cirque du Soleil has been on my bucket list for as long as I’ve know this amazing thing existed. I love the circus, and while I’ve only ever been to small ones around New Zealand (oh, and a Russian one in Mongolia), I’ve always wanted to go to one of these ginormous performances. I was lucky enough to finally get to go.

Cirque du Soleil: Totem has been here in Auckland for the past month, and Dad decided to use the money from a UK tax return to get tickets. It was the coolest.thing.ever! When it ended I just wanted to go again…and again and again and again…and, guys, if I suddenly stop blogging and disappear off the face of the earth, don’t worry…I’ve just run away with the circus.

Obviously no pictures were allowed, which means, obviously, I took some anyway. Here are the ones that weren’t taken inside the tent (those inside were super duper dark ones):

Yup. I bought a mask at the end of the show. I often go to events and seriously regret not getting any souvenir-type things. So this time, I decided to get a mask, the soundtrack (awesome music!) and then just a fridge magnet.

Anyway, the performance was absolutely incredible! The set was super cool. There was the circular stage in the middle (hence…circus), and then a sort of ramp that had different scenes projected onto it, like water and stone, and the moon at one point. There was an electronic bit on the ramp that could open up to allow the performers to run out from under the stage, and it could move forward to attach to the centre circular stage, like a bridge. It could also sort of fold back…anyway, hard to explain, but trust me, it was awesome!

My favourite act was a couple of trapeze artists, and while it was the most simple in terms of costumes and extra set designs, it was so flippin awesome! They were a girl and guy, and it was a really sweet story that they acted out. That’s the other thing! They were good actors, as well as performing their routine. Here’s a picture of them:

So neat! They were brilliant! All the performers were incredible and so talented! I won’t be able to watch the Olympics or the gymnastics again without picturing them in amazing costumes and moving to brilliant music. In amongst the beautiful artists were a couple of guys who came out and did comedy sections between the really big acts. It was a great way to add laughter into what was a heart-stopping performance otherwise. Here are some other images from Totem, but obviously it’s way way way cooler in real life.

If you have the chance to go to any of the Cirque du Soleil shows in your life time, DO IT. So worth it! I’m very excited that I’m able to cross this off my bucket list! Now I just want to go again…
