Being a lover of books and also movies, I also make sure if I see a movie that is about to be released that I want to see, and it’s based on a book, that I will read the book before I see the movie. My reasoning being, if it looks like a movie I would like to see, then surely I would enjoy the book? Occasionally I’ll enjoy the movie more, but 99% of the time, the book will win me over. There are several books on my shelf and on my Kindle at the moment that I have to read in order for me to watch the movie…and then there are movies which are coming out in the next year or so that have prompted me to read the book. So today I thought I’d share 8 (okay, so a little more than ‘several’) of those books with you.

Cloud Atlas, by David Mitchell

So I bought this book at an opshop in England, and only afterwards did I find out they were making a movie. The film came out in 2012, and while I really want to see the movie, I also really want to read the book. It’s sitting on my shelf, but it’s not on my high priority list.

Ender’s Game, by Orson Scott Card
This has been on my to-read list for a while now, and the movie coming out last year really should have pushed me to read it. And I will, I will. I bought the book last year, and while my Dad stole it for a while so he could read it, I have yet to get around to it just yet. This movie was out in 2013.

How I Live Now, by Meg Rosoff

I actually bought this book for two reasons: 1) it sounded interesting, and 2) the version I bought had a sticker on it saying it was a movie too. But have I read it yet? Nope. It’s quite a thin one too, so there’s no excuses really. This movie was out in 2013.

Water for Elephants, by Sara Gruen

I wanted to see this movie when it came out – mostly because i love the circus – but when I realised it was a book, well…you can guess. I didn’t see it, and then I forgot to read the book, and now literally years have gone by, as this movie came out in 2011. But I found this book at the opshop the other day, so it’s moved up my to-read list!

Eleanor and Park, by Rainbow Rowell

After hearing so many good things about this book, I put it on my to-read list. And then I discovered that they were turning it into a movie! Even more incentive to read it now. I don’t know when it’s coming out, but hopefully not before I’ve read it!

The Best of Me, by Nicholas Sparks

So I’ve only read one Nicholas Sparks book (*gasp* I know I know), and I did enjoy it. I’ve seen a lot of the movies (though not some of the more recent ones) and I love them a lot. So I decided that I need to read a book and then watch a movie. This one comes out in October this year, I believe.

If I Stay, by Gayle Forman

I’ve known that this book was out there in the world, and I think I knew someone who had read it and loved it, so when I saw the trailer for the movie the other day I knew that I should actually pick up the book. Unfortunately, I don’t own this one, and I couldn’t find it in the book store the other day, so I’ll have to order it online or persuade the library to purchase a copy for me. This one comes out in August this year

Paper Towns, by John Green

This has been sitting on my shelf for a few months now, but I haven’t got around to reading it. I think I will be reading it after I finish the book I’m reading now though (which is a Net Galley book, so I feel it has priority). If it’s anything like as awesome as The Fault in Our Stars, then both the book and the movie should be wonderful. The one comes out sometime next year, I think. So I don’t know if this the actual movie cover, but I couldn’t find one. It’ll have to do.

What about you? Do you read books before you watch the movie?
