Continuing on from yesterday’s post, we arrived after a 9 hour flight into Sydney, at about 9am their time, having had a very rough night on the plane, and being an hour delayed at the Hong Kong end. There was a lady who was incredibly ill, and they flight attendants insisted that she and her family get off the flight as she looked like she needed to be in hospital, and anything could have happened once we got into the air. So that delayed us. And then the next issue was, that because that took time (getting them off the flight and finding their bags etc), we had missed our scheduled runway time, so had to wait until there was another open slot.
And then when we tried to leave, one of the engines wasn’t working properly, so they had to get a guy out to start it manually (it was only the ‘auto’ function that wasn’t working…apparently), and then he had to fill out paper work. So I watched an entire movie just sitting on the
tarmac in Hong Kong Airport.
But anyway!
We made it to Sydney.

We jumped off the plane and got the train into town. Because we were meeting some friends at around midday, and we were a little early, we had a short wander around the waterfront and checked out the Opera House, which was exactly how it looked on all the postcards, and saw a street artist or two. We met the friends, jumped on a boat and did a little round of the harbor and surrounding bays before getting out at Darling Harbour and having lunch in a restaurant, which was very lovely. Dad had a crocodile burger. No kidding. I had a taste of it, and it sort of was like…fishy chicken. If that makes sense.

We also managed to see a koala, quite by accident really, as we walked past the zoo and there was one sleeping in a tree in the main entrance. Oh hello. Also, we saw Eric Bana. Just a wax figure, mind you, but that was exciting.

I really liked the small bit I saw of Sydney, and would love to go back one day. But in winter, I think. Thankfully we were there when there was a lull in the hot weather, and it was cloudy most of the day. It was only about 22 degrees when we were there, but a few days before it was 27 and the forecast was for 28 a few days later. Ew. I don’t do heat, especially humidity.
Our flight was an evening one, and, thankfully, it was only about 3 hours long. We finally arrived back home at around midnight Thursday 9th Jan/Friday 10th Jan. It took a week to get home, and I wouldn’t advise it. Not that it wasn’t great stopping in Hong Kong and then spending a day in Sydney, but I think it’s a lot less tiring to just go bam! Two long flights and you’re there in the equivalent of a day.

And so ends our journey home. Almost. As you read this, we are probably on another plane (sigh) up to Wellington, where we will be for a few days, and then I’m going back to my home city until the end of January, before heading up to Auckland, where I’ll (hopefully, work permitting) be living!
Hopefully blogging will go back to normal (ish) come February, but till then, please bare with me as I only have the internet sporadically. If you’d like to guest post at all any time in January, do let me know, even you have guest posted here before. I would love to have you, and it means I don’t have to worry too much about there being very little postings on the blog. You can find my details on the contact page.
